During my first summer with the kids after our divorce my ex-wife was brutal on the phone. She would deliberately make the kids cry and there are lots of stories about that, but this one sticks out in my mind. My oldest son got into trouble one day and as a result, he lost his fishing trip we had planned for the weekend. He wasn't happy and as usual his nightly phone call with his Mom centered around how awful I was. During the call my ex repeatedly told him that it wasn't his fault and that I was extremely mean for taking his trip away from him. She promised that as soon as he got home her brother would take him on a fishing trip, and she was taking me back to court to make sure he never had to see me again.
She didn't get her way, but the same things are still happening and, as a result, my son has learned that he doesn't have to take responsibility for anything. Plus, he can now always bitch to his mother about how awful I am.
